The Mary Heersink Institute for Global Health seeks to make an educational impact that is both innovative and a natural extension of UAB and the Heersink School of Medicine.
The creation of the institute is meant to serve as a global health hub for UAB, stretching the traditional boundaries of discrete academic missions and schools to give rise to a new cadre of global citizens who seek to have a greater impact through their work.
The institute aspires to develop scholars in global health by leveraging a partnership with McMaster University and other members of the Global Health Consortium and in turn has helped to co-found a Master of Science in Global Health Degree with the UAB School of Public Health.

To ensure successful bidirectional education, the institute aims to support faculty and trainees by identifying funding and pilot grants, supporting new training programs, navigating contracts, travel logistics, and other resources.
