This clinical fieldwork exchange program offers a unique training experience to the UAB fellow community. Selected UAB fellows will spend 4-6 weeks in Peru partnering with Socios En Salud.
Socios En Salud
Socios’ work in Peru emerged from one core idea—no community should lack access to care because a disease is considered “too expensive” or “too complicated” to treat. During the 1994 tuberculosis outbreak in Carabayllo, an underserved area north of the country’s capital, Socios responded with medical expertise and local partnerships. This form of response defines their approach and drives their work around the world. In almost three decades, Socios has treated tens of thousands of people for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and achieved cure rates of 83 percent – which is among the highest in the world.
At present, Socios is the largest international non-governmental organization in Peru and one of the largest in the Latin America and Caribbean Region. They focus their work primarily on low-resource urban and peri-urban areas and are closely partnered with the Ministry of Health.
