Obstetrics and Women's Health Fellowship

Training occurs over 1 year and is dedicated to developing competency in obstetrical care. Approximately half of the time is spent on the in-patient OBGYN service at Huntsville Hospital with the remaining time divided among supervising FM continuity clinic, OB clinic, OB Ultrasound clinic, and GYN procedures clinic in our outpatient Family Medicine Center. The OB fellow functions as a family medicine faculty member with an emphasis on teaching medical students and residents in various settings.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising in FM continuity clinic as per your calendar
  • FM OB Call as per your calendar
  • Teaching both medical students and residents on OB inpatient service and in FMC
  • Coordination of care as liaison with MFM for high-risk OB patients

Curriculum

Fellows will gain cometency in

  • Antepartum and postpartum care including
    • Various methods for inductions of labor
    • Gestational diabetes
    • Gestational hypertension/Pre-eclampsia/Eclampsia
    • Preterm labor
    • Chronic medical conditions in pregnancy
    • Trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC)
    • Postpartum hemorrhage
  • Obstetrical Procedures
    • Cesarean section and postoperative care
    • Spontaneous vaginal delivery
    • Operative vaginal delivery
    • VBAC
    • Vaginal laceration repairs
    • Postpartum tubal ligation
    • D&C for early pregnancy loss and retained products
    • External cephalic version
    • OB ultrasound
    • Circumcisions
  • Gynecology care
    • Contraceptive counseling including insertion and removal of LARC
    • Abnormal uterine bleeding
    • Colposcopy and cervical biopsy
    • Endometrial biopsy
  • Outpatient FM Clinic
    • Precept residents in continuity clinic
    • Precept OB clinic on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon
    • OB jail clinic on Tuesday afternoon
    • OB Ultrasound clinic on Thursday mornings
  • Teaching
    • Lead daily OB morning report for medical students and residents on OB inpatient service
    • Supervise residents for L&D admissions, rounds, and vaginal deliveries
    • Lecture at family medicine didactics twice per year
    • Participate in and attend weekly grand rounds/M&M conference
    • Participate in and attend OB journal club
    • Instruct in the annual June ALSO course for interns

Eligibility and Requirements

  • Applicants must be a graduate of an accredited family practice residency program (Allopathic or Osteopathic).
  • Applicants must be board-certified or board-eligible in Family Practice.
  • Applicants will be required to obtain medical licensure in the state of Alabama and a Federal DEA certificate before the beginning of the fellowship.

    • Procedure Log
    • Three letters of recommendation from active members of the American Academy of Family Physicians, including the program director and the faculty member/preceptor responsible for obstetrical training at the applicant's residency program.
      • A letter of recommendation from an OB/GYN physician who has direct knowledge of the applicant's clinical OB skills is advisable.
    • It is strongly recommended that the fellow complete training in Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO).
    • Preference for admission to the fellowship program may be given to individuals who plan to practice in rural Alabama.
