Department of Pathology Work Study
The Heersink School of Medicine Department of Pathology is seeking a Communications/PR/Journalism major (undergrad or grad) with experience in Joomla, Adobe Creative Cloud Suite programs, and social media management (HootSuite, Sprout, etc.) to assist the communications team with updating content on the department website and social media accounts. Additional projects and duties may be assigned as needed, including writing, graphic design, videography, photography, and event/meeting coverage.
Gain experience in public relations and scientific and medical communications working with the communications director and communications specialist. Projects may include writing/proofing content for press releases, website maintenance and development, social media account management, and graphic design focused on the layout of print and electronic materials to support department activities.
Requirements: You must be awarded Federal Work Study funds to apply for this position. Desire to gain experience in communications. Previous experience is preferred but not required.

Heersink Dean's Office Internship
The Heersink School of Medicine Dean's Office is seeking an intern for the spring 2025 semester. This internship supports the Dean's Office communications team with content writing, website maintenance, social media, digital requests, reporting, and more. As a Dean's Office intern, you will be working with and interviewing students, staff, and faculty, requiring excellent communication, collaboration, and professionalism. The ideal candidate will be detail oriented, organized, flexible, eager to learn, and able to work 20-37 hours per week. Must commit to at least one semester; however, a year is preferred.
Responsibilities

Research, interview, and write original content for the School of Medicine news, including student profiles, faculty news briefs, promotions for upcoming events, and other news and feature articles

Provide photo and editorial coverage for events as assigned

Post new and shared content to the School of Medicine websites

Assist in general website content updates

Tracking metrics - social media, website content, newsletter, email marketing, etc.

Requirements

Sophomore, junior, senior, or recent graduate studying journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field

Department of Surgery Internship
The Department of Surgery is accepting applications for a self-starting and motivated professional to join the team as a communications intern. Together with other members of the communications group, the intern will help capture breaking news in one of UAB’s largest clinical departments and share updates through website articles, social media posts, and press release pitches to UAB’s University Relations. Interns will also have the chance to gain experience with website management, graphic design via Adobe Express, and event support and photography. Interns have the ability to join department committees and effect strategic communications efforts on a departmental level. The position can be held on a semester-by-semester basis, with the possibility for a two-year maximum.
Department of Neurosurgery Internship
The Heersink School of Medicine Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a self-starting and creative communications intern. This intern will support the communications team in capturing and disseminating breaking news and updates through news articles, social media posts, and press releases that highlight the work being done in one of UAB’s premier clinical departments. Responsibilities will span across content development, website management, graphic design, reporting and photography, offering a comprehensive and unique experience in healthcare communications. The ideal candidate will be detail oriented, organized, motivated, and eager to learn.
Responsibilities
Research, interview, and write original content for the department's website, newsletters, UAB News, and digital/print publications
Design graphics and visual materials using Adobe Creative Cloud that enhance departmental messages across digital and print media
Post new and shared content to the Neurosurgery website and assist in general website content updates
Assist in planning and creating social media posts for Neurosurgery accounts (X and LinkedIn) and analyze engagement data to guide future content and strategies
Requirements
