Purpose
The goal of this distinction is to provide a pathway for students with a strong commitment to health equity to acquire the knowledge and skills to promote health equity for medically underserved communities.
Who Can Apply
- Medical students in good academic standing
- Students can join the program at any point in the first two years of medical school, after completing their first semester
Program Requirements
Coursework/training elements | One elective (see below) in health equity One special topic (see below) in health equity OR Completion of Health Equity Scholars curriculum OR Completion of Albert Schweitzer Fellow curriculum OR Completion of CU2RE curriculum |
Patient Care | 12 hours of clinical work at EAB OR 12 hours of clinical care for underserved groups (with pre-approval) (these hours can also count toward the volunteer requirement) |
Education | 4 hours of TA work for Office of Service Learning OR Creation of educational products for students such as service learning guidebooks, neighborhood fact sheets, etc. (with pre-approval) |
Research | Scholarly activity with health equity focus (with pre-approval) |
Service/Community Engagement | 40 hours community service 20 hours of service learning elective coursework (see below) |
Electives
Students may choose to take an elective course in a health equity-related topic to meet the coursework requirements of the program. Options include (but are not limited to):

Service Learning Electives
Students are required to complete 20 hours of service learning work while in medical school.
