Training in Immunologic Diseases and Basic Immunology is focused specifically and comprehensively on the field of immunology. Over the years the preceptors and graduates of the program have made major contributions to the substantial growth of the research and training programs of the participating departments and units at UAB. More than 150 postdoctoral and predoctoral trainees have been supported since 1976. The majority have gone on to pursue academic careers in immunology.
History of the Immunology Training Program
Directors & Associate Director of the UAB Program in Immunology (1976 to present)
In 1976 the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) was awarded an Institutional National Research Service Award to support a training program in Allergic and Immunologic Diseases and Basic Immunity. At its inception under the directorship of Robert Stroud, MD, the program included three cohesive and widely interactive groups of immunologists: 1) Developmental and Clinical Immunology Group of the Departments of Medicine, Microbiology, Pathology, and Pediatrics; 2) the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology of the Department of Medicine; and 3) the Mucosal Immunobiology Unit of the Departments of Microbiology, Medicine, Oral Biology, and Pathology. Complementing the program was the inclusion of the Neuroimmunology and the Host Defense Groups, both formed in 1996, and the Transplantation Immunology Group, which joined in 2000.
Following the departure of Dr. Stroud in 1979, John E. Volanakis, MD assumed directorship of the program. In 1991, Max D. Cooper, M.D., Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics, Microbiology, and Pathology, and Member of the National Academy of Sciences, took up the mantle of leadership with the Assistance of Harry W. Schroeder, Jr. M.D., Ph.D. as Associate Director. Following Dr. Cooper’s retirement in 2008, Dr. Schroeder was promoted to the directorship and Laurie Harrington, Ph.D. was recruited as the new Associate Director.
