The Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Training Program was built on the ideal of "Excellence without ego." This aspirational principle is the foundation of every interaction, every day.

Ryan Kraemar, MDRyan Kraemer, MD, FACP, DirectorUAB is a unique and wonderful place to grow as a physician. Our residents provide exceptional care for a diverse patient population with complex medical needs. We provide comprehensive clinical training with an emphasis on clinical reasoning in a supportive and caring learning environment. To quote our first Chair of the Department of Medicine, Dr. Tinsley Harrison, we believe “no greater opportunity, responsibility, or obligation can fall to the lot of a human being than to become a physician.”

Our program structure is intentionally designed to provide a diverse array of clinical experiences and progressive autonomy, so our residents are well prepared to manage any clinical situation upon graduation. Our inpatient training sites include UAB Hospital, a 1,200-bed quaternary care referral center for Alabama and surrounding states, and the Birmingham Veterans Administration Medical Center. Our continuity clinic sites are the Birmingham VA and Whitaker Clinic of UAB hospital. The VA is directly across the street from UAB Hospital allowing our residents to spend significant time together, develop long-lasting friendships, and enjoy convenient parking.

Our residents have diverse backgrounds and interests, and we are dedicated to each resident’s individual growth. Within our program, we offer tracks in medical education, women’s health, primary care, POCUS, and health disparities. We have robust curricula to develop skills in leadership, research, patient safety, quality improvement, and many more. Our residents present research at regional and national meetings, publish in high-impact journals, successfully obtain fellowship positions, and become leaders in the community and academic medical centers.

As we navigate the challenges and opportunities of 21st-century medicine, we promise to preserve the legacy and core values of internal medicine. Our program is defined by Excellence without Ego, and we will continue to ensure our program is one that would make Dr. Tinsley Harrison proud.
