One of the intangible aspects of a residency training program is the culture of the training environment. Are the faculty inspring teachers? What's the hidden curriculum? How will my fellow residents interact with me, and with each other?

The Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Training Program was built on the ideal of "Excellence without ego." This aspirational principle is the foundation of every interaction, every day.

During residency, you will experience exceptional clinical training with exposure to rigorous research. Cases will be complex and challenging. And the experience will mold you into a physician thoroughly prepared for the next steps in your journey.

At the same time, you will experience a network of supportive people who live and breathe the values of compassion, wellness and inclusion that will serve as a lasting model of excellence in academic medicine.

Throughout residency, our residents are provided specific coaching and guidance to prepare them for success at their level of training.

• Intern Bootcamp is a noon conference series in the first several months of intern year aimed at preparing interns for their new patient care role. Topics include EKG basics, common cross-over problems, calling consults, and more.

• Intern Burnout Party is an intern gathering around February at a faculty member's house to provide a time to socialize, reflect, and share stories from intern year.

• Central Venous Catheter Training is a workshop where residents get hands-on practice and coaching from instructors on how to properly insert CVLs in the UAB simulation lab in order to build procedural skills and confidence.

• PGY-2 Bootcamp is a noon conference series in June for the rising PGY-2 residents to help them effectively transition into the upper-level resident role. Workshops include topics such as working efficiently and helping the struggling intern.

• PGY-2 Retreat is an all-day event at our program director, Dr. Ryan Kraemer's, house. This is an opportunity for PGY-2 residents to learn about leadership styles, teamwork, giving feedback, and the challenges of the PGY-2 year.

• Shock Week is a simulation for new PGY-2 residents to master leading a code. This workshop is done with an interdisciplinary group of learners, including pharmacists and nurses, at UAB's state-of-the-art simulation lab.

• Board Review Series is a weekly noon lecture series given by faculty members in the Spring semester for the PGY-3 residents to review common board topics.

• Fellowship Interview Preparation is a workshop given by Dr. Ryan Kraemer, our program director, for PGY-3 residents to advise on writing personal statements, getting letters of recommendation, and how to choose fellowship programs.
