Purpose
To recognize medical students who demonstrate exceptional knowledge in global health, cultivate a strong service orientation toward global health communities, and develop critical thinking skills to address global health challenges.
Who Can Apply
- Medical students in good academic standing (not on academic probation) after completing their first semester.
- Open to MS1 and MS2 students.
- Class of 2026 students may be considered if interested.
Program Requirements
Students will successfully complete the following throughout medical school:
- International Elective in Global Health
- Completed in MS1 or MS4 (IME-structured or an approved student-structured elective).
- Pillars of Global Health Modules
- Completion certificate required.
- Global Health Co-enrolled Course
- Global Health Seminars
- Participation in total 8 seminars.
- Global Health Discovery Project
- Scholarly activity aligned with a UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
- Patient Care
- 12 hours of direct patient care.
- Community Service
- 40 hours, either locally or internationally.
- Peer Education
- 4 hours active involvement in educating peers.
- Mentorship in RoD GH
- 4 hours engaged as a mentor and mentee within the program.
- Information Sharing
- Participation in communication and knowledge sharing within the program.

Scholarship
- International Medical Education will provide funding in the form of scholarship for the international elective requirement. Scholarship amounts will be based on scholarship funding for that year, as well as elective costs. Student should still expect to fund costs for travel, any excursions they may choose to do, food, and souvenirs.
- Scholarship opportunities will give preference to students who have not yet received a scholarship for an international elective from International Medical Education. Any students who received scholarship for an international elective, either through MSEP or RoDGH, will be considered after first time students have been awarded scholarships and pending remaining scholarship funding.
Application Process
- Submit Application
- Email a completed application to RDGH@uab.edu. Applications are open from December 2, 2024, and must be received by January 6, 2025, at 5 PM CST.
- Application Review
- UAB IME will review applications and schedule interviews with selected applicants.
- Interview
- Acceptance and Offer
- Successful candidates will receive an acceptance letter with an offer to join the program.
- Elective Offer (if applicable)
- If you applied for an MS1 international elective, a separate acceptance and offer letter will be provided.
- Pre-departure Requirements
- For those participating in international electives, complete all necessary paperwork and pre-departure preparations listed on the application form.
