The LHC is co-led by Mike Wells, M.D., MSPH (Medical Director), Amit Gaggar, M.D., Ph.D. (Scientific Director), and Gabriela Oates, Ph.D. (Populations Health Sciences Director) in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Medicine.
Our Key Program Areas
The Lung Health Center currently has key program areas spanning Airway Disease, Interestitital Lung Disease (ILD), Intensive Care Unity (ICU) research, Lung Transplant, Thoracic Oncology, Pneumonia, Asthma, and COPD.
Our History
The UAB Lung Health Center (LHC) was founded in 1986 by William Bailey, M.D., who served as the LHC Medical Director until 2007. From 2009 to 2023, the Center was co-led by Drs. Mark Dransfield (Medical Director) and J. Edwin Blalock (Scientific Director). Since 2023, the LHC is co-led by Drs. Mike Wells (Medical Director), Amit Gaggar (Scientific Director), and Gabriela Oates (Populations Health Sciences Director). In 2020, the LHC was designated as a pilot UAB University-Wide Interdisciplinary Research Center (UWIRC).
