The UAB MHERC Young Professionals Board is an organization of 25- to 45-year old professionals. These MHERC ambassadors share a commitment to engaging new audiences in support of the Center's efforts to eliminate health disparities. The board's primary function is to raise funds to support research, community outreach, and training programs for junior faculty, medical students, and undergraduates.

    Why did you join the MHERC YPB: There are a few aspects that encouraged me to join the MHERCY YPB. However, the number one reason has to be to provide impact. Being from the black Belt, I know firsthand how underrepresented the population can be. By providing education, resources, and knowledge to people of color I can ultimately give back to the communities that raised me and made me who I am.

    Board member Dewayne Bailey was recently promoted to Director of the Alabama Rural Health Collaborative, where he will work closely with J. Paul Jones Hospital CEO Jessica McGraw in a chief operating officer/administrator capacity. He was also listed as one of the Birmingham Business Journal's 40 under 40. Read more.

    Board member Tamara Wilson completed the 7-week Alabama Community Engagement Alliance (CEAL) Inaugural Community Research Institute (CRI). This program equips individuals with knowledge and tools to join Alabama CEAL as partners in community-engaged scientific research on health and well-being. Read more.

 

Harlem in the 'Ham

Go back in time for a night of fun and fundraising at the MHERC Young Professionals Board's Harlem in the ‘Ham event. This 1920’s themed night is an event where everyone is a VIP. Proceeds from Harlem in the ‘Ham benefit Healthy Happy Kids, the MHERC’s childhood obesity prevention program. Since the first Casino Royale in 2009, more than 3,000 young professionals, business and community leaders have raised over $500,000 to help children learn healthy living skills.
