UAB Hospital

Hospital is the centerpiece of the UAB Health System. Situated among major research centers and clinics, UAB Hospital serves approximately 35,000 patients annually and provides them with a complete range of primary and specialty care services.

On the right is a much older view of the hospital, established in 1945 as the teaching hospital for the Heersink School of Medicine. Today, as seen above in a more current photo, it is Alabama's major tertiary care center and a modern medical complex serving approximately 35,000 patients annually.

At University hospital, a major center for clinical research, and the home of some of the top medical programs in America, the 900-bed facility also offers patients the most up-to-date treatments and innovations in health care.

Kirklin Clinic

Kirklin Clinic

Outpatient care is provided at The Kirklin Clinic at UAB, a large, state-of-the-art facility which opened in 1992. It is a specially designed center for outpatient care housing more than 600 physicians in 35 specialties. The mission is to serve health care needs with compassion, dedication and excellence. The staff of the Kirklin Clinic combine clinical care with teaching and research to produce an environment that is in the best interest of the patient. The Kirklin Clinic is a member of the UAB Health System, whose physicians and programs have gained national and international recognition for their excellence.

The Kirklin Clinic (an inside view shown to the right) is the outpatient practice facility for the Heersink School of Medicine at UAB containing outpatient clinics for neurologic subspecialties such as epilepsy, neuromuscular disease, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, neuro-oncology, and behavioral neurology, as well as stroke. 

The university is very proud of The Kirklin Clinic, a spacious facility inside and out, designed by architect I. M. Pei. It has over 22,000 neurology ambulatory visits annually.

Children's of Alabama

Children's of Alabama

Since 1911, Children’s of Alabama has provided specialized medical care for ill and injured children. Ranked among the best children’s hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, Children’s serves patients from every county in Alabama and nearly every state. With more than 3.5 million square feet, it is one of the largest pediatric medical facilities in the United States. Children’s offers inpatient and outpatient services at its Russell Campus on Birmingham’s historic Southside with additional specialty services provided at Children’s South, Children’s on 3rd and in Huntsville and Montgomery. Primary medical care is provided in more than a dozen communities across central Alabama. Children’s is the only health system in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. It is a private, not-for-profit medical center that serves as the teaching hospital for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) pediatric medicine, surgery, psychiatry, research and residency programs. The medical staff consists of UAB faculty and Children’s full-time physicians as well as private practicing community physicians.

Children's also serves as the primary teaching facility for UAB's Department of Pediatrics and boasts a medical research division that is second to none. Its specialty centers for the treatment of cancer, diabetes, sleep disorders, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, epilepsy, lung disease, and kidney disease serve as the backdrop for learning and discovery for health care professionals dedicated to the care of children.
