As a communications director in the UAB School of Medicine, Carter leads and executes communications strategy in medical education and for the school’s regional campuses in Huntsville and Montgomery.

Before joining UAB in 2013, Carter worked as a staff writer at Alabama newspapers for 5 years, then shifted her career focus from journalism to communications and public relations. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Auburn University and a master’s degree in public administration from UAB.

The Patrice L. Knight, M.D., Endowed Memorial Scholarship, named to honor the longtime regional chair of Pediatrics at the Huntsville Regional Medical Campus, will recognize medical students who embody Knight’s passions for teaching, mentorship, and community service. Knight retired in 2020 after 35 years at the UAB Huntsville campus and passed away in early 2022.
Shivani Malhotra, M.D., has been named the chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine’s Huntsville Regional Medical Campus.

Work on the new active learning center for team-based medical student learning on the second floor of the Volker Hall Education Tower begins Monday, July 11.

Nine students from the UAB Heersink School of Medicine were named in the 2022-2023 class of Alabama Schweitzer Fellows, a group of graduate students across Alabama who will spend the next year implementing service projects designed to address social factors that impact health. 

With 100 percent of the class of 2022 matching into residency positions, UAB students will continue their medical education at 82 institutions in 30 states across the country.
