Large, human cardiac-muscle patches created in the lab have been tested for the first time on large animals in a heart attack model. This clinically relevant approach showed that the patches significantly improved recovery from heart attack injury.
UAB has been ranked as one of the top 100 hospital and health systems with great women’s health programs by Becker’s Hospital Review. Specifically, UAB’s Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine was highlighted for its 24 hours a day, 365 days a year availability and support for patients in need of high-risk obstetric care.
“Human studies suggest DMPA use may raise the risk of HIV infection in exposed women by about 40 percent,” said Zdenek Hel, Ph.D., professor in the UAB Department of Pathology and a co-author of the study. Research indicates alternative contraception methods may reduce the risk in vulnerable populations.
Gene Siegal, M.D., Ph.D., has been named interim chair of the Department of Genetics beginning Jan. 15. Siegal replaces former chair, Bruce Korf, M.D., Ph.D., who was named the Chief Genomics Officer for UAB Medicine in 2017.
