UAB and UAB Medicine have begun the enterprise implementation of OnCore, a management system for clinical trials and study-related information. The system is being expanded across the School of Medicine in three waves, with the first wave focused on the Department of Medicine.

Bradley Wills, M.D., a PGY-4 resident in the UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, won first place for his poster titled, "Outcomes with Overlapping Surgery at a Large Academic Medical Center."

Reducing light and noise made a psychiatric ICU unit calmer and safer, study says

Turning down the lights and reducing noise levels as part of a stimulation reduction initiative can decrease assaults and the amount of time patients must spend in restraint at psychiatric intensive care units, according to new research from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham and Proton International have secured funding for the UAB Proton Therapy Center. The facility will be the first proton therapy center in the state of Alabama. UAB and Proton International expect to break ground in January 2018 and open the facility in approximately two years.
Aaron Fobian, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology and researcher at the UAB School of Health Professions’ Nutrition Obesity Research Center, has been elected Councilor for The Obesity Society — Pediatric Obesity Section. Her term began Nov. 1, and she will serve for the next two years.

Michael Cox became the UAB Division of Transplantation’s 10,000th patient to receive a kidney transplant thanks to the generosity of a deceased donor. Tony Adams became kidney transplant recipient No. 10,001, with his gift coming from a living donor — his brother, Daniel. The transplants make UAB one of only three U.S. transplant programs to cross the 10,000-kidney transplant mark.
