On June 29, 2018, UAB Callahan Eye Hospital hosted the inaugural Callahan Night at the Ballpark. This was an event for faculty, staff, and their families to come together for food, fun, and a ballgame. The event was held at Regions Field and the Birmingham Baron’s hosted the Jackson Generals.

UAB Department of Ophthalmology among Top 10 in NIH grant support
The UAB Department of Ophthalmology hit a major milestone in 2017. According to annual figures available through Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research, the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology is ranked 6th in the country in the amount of funding it receives from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with over $7.9 million in NIH grant support during calendar year 2017.

New grant will fund research of biomechanical markers in glaucoma
Massimo A. Fazio, Ph.D., assistant professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology, and Christopher A. Girkin M.D., have received a four-year, $2.55 million R01 grant from the National Eye Institute to explore how visual field loss developed with glaucoma is associated with individual-specific biomechanics of the eye.
UAB Ophthalmology celebrates a successful 2017 Annual Clinical and Research Symposium
The UAB Department of Ophthalmology held an extremely successful 2017 Annual Clinical and Research Symposium at the Westin in Birmingham during May 19-20, with nearly 100 attendees. This was the 18th year of the symposium and included resident, faculty, and featured lectures on dry eye and ocular surface disorders, as well as uveitis and retina.
