UAB Orthopaedics offers a full range of resident and fellow training all conducted on UAB’s Birmingham Southside campus.
The five-year program has six resident positions at each level with comprehensive training provided by the 28 clinical faculty at multiple venues.
The primary base is UAB Highlands Hospital and adjacent Orthopaedic Specialties Building which houses the resident library and study facility, conference rooms, research laboratories and faculty offices. In the adjacent hospital, clinics and outpatient and inpatient surgeries are conducted by most of the orthopaedic subspecialists. At the main University Hospital, the trauma and spine services are housed with their clinics at the Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital. The Veterans Affairs facility and Children's of Alabama are located in adjacent structures and provide resident rotations in addition to a rotation at the Andrew’s Sports Medicine Institute. The Sports Medicine Center is located within Children's of Alabama.
Post-graduate fellowship training, one year in length and integrated with the residency, is provided in hand surgery, foot and ankle surgery, traumatology, spine, and research. Each program also has its own curriculum, lecture series and journal clubs and rotates residents with the fellows. Research activities are also conducted in each of the orthopaedic subspecialties.
