The UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, under the leadership of Dr. Steven Theiss, with its 32 full-time faculty and 11 clinical adjunct faculty, provides comprehensive patient care in eight section areas.

These services are conducted at UAB Highlands Hospital, University Hospital, the Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital, Childrens’ Hospital and the Sports Medicine Center, the Veterans Affairs Hospital, and the Cooper-Green Outpatient Clinics.

The five-year residency program offers 30 resident positions with six at each level. The residency program is fully accredited by the Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education. One-year fellowships are available in hand and upper extremity, foot and ankle, joint reconstruction, spine, and trauma. We also offer research opportunities through our Orthopaedic Surgery Researchers Program. Research activities are conducted in each section.

Orthopaedic surgery is dedicated to its mission to provide excellence in clinical care, research, and education.
