Several Department of Orthopaedic Surgery faculty members have led or are planning to lead educational seminars, panels, and courses across the nation this summer and beyond.
Below is a listing of faculty engagements, sorted by date of the event.
Demystifying the Orthopaedic Speciality
On May 5, John D. Sherrill Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery Steven Theiss, M.D., and Program Director of the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program Michael Johnson, M.D., were panelists at the Medtronic event, "Demystifying the Orthopaedic Speciality." Theiss and Johnson used the panel as a time to encourage URM medical students to consider orthopaedic surgery.
Posterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries
Section Chief of Sports Medicine, Amit Momaya, M.D., presented on a panel, “Posterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries and also moderated a panel, “Knee: Biologics and Transplantation” at the Southern Orthopaedic Association’s Southern at the SEC Sports Injury Update 2021 at Ross Bridge, May 26-29.
Current Concepts of Periprosthetic Fractures Around Total Hip & Knee Arthroplasty
Associate Professor Herrick Siegel, M.D., will be one of the faculty panel members for the session, Current Concepts of Periprosthetic Fractures Around Total Hip & Knee Arthroplasty on June 3. The event is sponsored by Smith & Nephew.
Pediatric Upper Extremity Injuries
Assistant Professor Kevin Williams, M.D., will speak on a panel “Pediatric Upper Extremity Injuries” at the Southern Orthopaedic Association’s (SOA) Annual Meeting July 21-24 in Isle of Palms, SC. He also plans to present an e-poster on forearm fractures.
Cervical Spine Injuries in Athletes and Return to Play
Theiss will also participate in a symposium entitled “Cervical Spine Injuries in Athletes and Return to Play” at the SOA annual meeting. Participants will discuss the effects of spine injuries in athletes and methods of improving their healing process in order to get them back to their sport.
Revision Hip and Knee Masters Course
Siegel will also be knee section course director for the Smith & Nephew Revision Hip and Knee Masters Course July 30-31st in Rosemont, IL. The course will present the medical and surgical management of revision surgery and will feature didactic lectures, case discussions in small group sessions, and hands-on cadaver workshops.
“The fact that so many faculty have been invited to participate and lead these educational opportunities speaks volumes to the clinical, educational, and academic missions of our department,” said Theiss. “Our faculty represent the institution and all that we stand for so well, and I look forward to their presentations.”
AO Spine Course—Modern technologies in Spinal Surgery
Theiss will round out the year by acting as chairperson of a pretigious course, "AO Spine Course—Modern technologies in Spinal Surgery" taught in Davos, Switzerland on Nov. 28-Dec. 1. The goals for the event are for participants to gain knowledge and practical experience with emerging perioperative technologies in spine surgery. Ultimately, participants will better understand the optimal utility of these emerging techniques in improving patient outcomes.
