Match Day 2019 ushered in a new group of orthopaedic surgery residents, while saying goodbye to others who will soon leave UAB for different programs across the country. With 98 percent of students’ matching into residency positions, UAB students will continue their medical educations at 89 institutions across 30 states.
As part of our annual series, the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery will feature incoming and outgoing trainees for all UAB Orthopaedics programs. Read more about the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency below, as well as its six new residents and its six graduating residents.
Hello:
This year, UAB celebrates a successful recruitment for residents in its 37 residency programs. A total of 216 new residents, representing 67 U.S. and 26 international universities, will begin this summer in programs at Birmingham, Huntsville, Selma and Montgomery.
The Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program welcomes six new residents – three from Alabama, one from Massachusetts, one from Ohio and one from Texas. Of those six residents, three are UAB students: Will Davis, Hank Debell and Andrew McGee.
McGee said he was impressed by UAB’s Orthopaedic Surgery Residency and is looking forward to sharing in the feeling of camaraderie that he observed between the program’s faculty and residents.
“I chose UAB because the program fosters an environment of genuine, strong relationships among co-residents and attendings who motivate and educate each other to continually improve the care they provide and the field of orthopaedics as a whole,” McGee said. “Furthermore, UAB offers great hands-on operative experience with tremendous volume to ensure the development of well-rounded and proficient surgeons.”
Ohio native and incoming orthopaedic surgery resident Alex Roszman also cited the social dynamics of the program as a primary reason for his preference for UAB.
“The opportunities provided by UAB’s Orthopaedic Surgery Residency are exceptional,” Roszman said. “The faculty’s interest in the success of residents, as well as the institution’s resources and facilities, set UAB apart. I immediately felt at home with the residents and faculty during my visit.”

Goodbye:
Six graduating residents of the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program will soon leave UAB to take positions in fellowship programs at six different institutions across six different states throughout the country.
Now preparing for a pediatric fellowship at Rady Children’s Hospital in California, outgoing resident Megan Severson, M.D., originally said of UAB’s Orthopaedic Surgery Residency, when she was new to the program, that the diverse specialty training available at UAB allows residents to better decide which fellowship is right for them.
“UAB showed to be a hard-working program with good variety,” Severson said. “Residents get to rotate through every subspecialty multiple times, both as lower-level residents and as upper-level residents, which helps when getting involved with research and when deciding which fellowship to pursue.”
Outgoing Residents:
-
Fuchs, Christoph, M.D.
Hometown: La Center, WA
Undergraduate: Whitman College; Walla Walla, WA
Medical School: Baylor College of Medicine; Houston, TX
Next Steps: Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center; Houston, TX
Why I Chose UAB: When deciding on a program, I knew I wanted a trauma-heavy, hands-on experience where I would see virtually everything. I was also looking for a place that offered plenty of operative time and autonomy. Last, I knew I wanted a strong sports and spine experience. I think UAB offers all of the above, though the best part has been the fantastic camaraderie we have amongst the residents.
-
Phillips, Sierra, M.D.
Hometown: Kennesaw, GA
Undergraduate: University of Georgia; Athens, GA
Medical School: Georgia Regents University; Athens, GA
Next Steps: Hand Surgery Fellowship at the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic; Memphis, TN
Why I Chose UAB: The camaraderie between the residents is unmatched, and the volume of cases is more than sufficient for training.

Severson, Megan, M.D.
Hometown: Covington, LA
Undergraduate: University of Wisconsin; Madison, WI
Medical School: Baylor College of Medicine; Houston, TX
Next Steps: Pediatric Orthopedics Fellowship at Rady Children's Hospital; San Diego, CA
Why I Chose UAB: UAB showed to be a hard-working program with good variety. Residents get to rotate through every subspecialty multiple times, both as lower-level residents and as upper-level residents, which helps when getting involved with research and when deciding which fellowship to pursue.

Why I Chose UAB: UAB is a well balanced program that offers exposure to all orthopedic subspecialties and high volume with all rotations offered in a few-block radius within Birmingham. All of the services are busy, which allows you to see a wide variety of pathology. Attendings are approachable and easy to work with. Research opportunities at UAB are available early and definitely are encouraged, but not overly forced. There is also an option for high school football game coverage throughout residency.

Why I Chose UAB: I rotated at UAB and ultimately chose UAB because I felt like they had a close group of residents who enjoyed what they did and enjoyed spending time with one another. From an academic standpoint, UAB offered a large volume and variety of orthopedic pathology that made it an ideal setup for training.
