Research authored by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery’s Clay Spitler, M.D., was published last month in the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma as the lead article of the journal’s August 2019 issue.

The featured article showcases the data seen in Spitler’s randomized, controlled trial, which investigated the use of tranexamic acid in high-energy fractures of the pelvis, acetabulum and proximal femur.

“We found that TXA significantly decreased total blood loss compared to the control group without increasing the risk of [venous thromboembolic events], but did not change the overall transfusion rate,” Spitler said.
