Congratulations to UAB medical students Austin Hughes and Mackenzie Sowers for placing first and second, respectively, in their research categories at the virtual poster session during the Dale J. Benos Medical Student Research Day.
Hughes was mentored by Assistant Professor Amit Momaya, M.D., and his presentation "Resiliency Does Not Correlate with Outcomes after Partial Meniscectomy" placed first in the Other Research category. The purpose of Hughes’ study was to analyze the correlation between resiliency, as measured using the Brief Resiliency Scale (BRS), and various knee outcome scores, including International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC), Lysholm, Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation (SANE) and Return to Work, following isolated partial meniscectomy.
Sowers was mentored by Associate Professor Sameer Naranje, M.D., and her presentation "The Impact of Resident Involvement on Patient Outcomes in Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty" tied for second place in the Surgery and Anesthesiology category. The aim of Sowers’ study was to determine the influence of resident involvement on complication rates in revision total hip arthroplasty. This study utilized the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) database and found that the presence of an orthopaedic resident in the operating room during revision total hip arthroplasty does not appear to increase short-term postoperative complication rates, despite a significant increase in operative time.
The Dale J. Benos Medical Student Research Day celebrates the research accomplishments of medical students and provides them with the opportunity to present their projects to fellow students and faculty. The day consists of oral and poster presentations by students enrolled in the M.D., M.D/M.P.H, M.D./M.S, M.D/MBA, and M.D./Ph.D. programs.
