The UAB Department of Pathology announces the appointment of Shi Wei, M.D., Ph.D., and Deepti Dhall, M.D., as Associate Directors of the Division of Anatomic Pathology (AP). In this role, Drs. Wei and Dhall will support Cristina Magi-Galluzzi, M.D., Ph.D., the Division Director.

Dr. Wei is a Senior Scientist in the Experimental Therapeutics Program of the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Scientist with the Comprehensive Arthritis, Musculoskeletal, Bone and Autoimmunity Center. He joined the department a decade ago as an instructor and has moved up the ranks to professor in 2016.

Dr. Wei will provide operational assistance to the director of the Anatomic Pathology division to include coordinating faculty sign-out schedule  with AP section heads. He will also serve as the liaison with the Community Practice Pathology Programs (CPPP) for the AP Division.

Dr. Dhall is a professor in the Division of Anatomic Pathology who joined UAB Pathology in June 2019 from Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where she was an associate professor. 

Dr. Dhall will assist in leading all educational and training activities for the division, working closely with the residency program director and associate directors, as well as with the various fellowship directors, to assure the highest quality of training curriculum and rotation structure for Anatomic Pathology. Dr. Dhall will also work to develop a robust strategy for clinical and translational research activities for AP trainees and junior faculty working closely with the director of the Translational Research Section, Dr. Upender Manne, and the director of Integrative Translational Oncologic Pathology Research, Dr. Sooryanarayana Varambally.

In addition,Dr. Marisa Marques is appointed as Associate Director of the Division of Laboratory Medicine. In this role, Dr. Marques will support X. Long Zheng, M.D., Ph.D., Division Director. Marques, M.D., is a Professor in Laboratory Medicine and Director of Transfusion Services at UAB Hospital.

Dr. Marques brings decades of experience to this role, having worked as a professor in the department for the last 20 years. She has won the UAB Presidential Award, Excellence in Medicine Award, and she is an Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society member. Dr. Marques is a School of Medicine Dean’s Excellence Award winner in teaching, and an Argus Society Award best lecture winner for hematopathology. An advocate and mentor, Dr. Marques is the current president of UAB’s chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association. Her research interests are patient blood management, including TTP and hyper-coagulability, as well as cost-effective utilization of laboratory assays. Marques also helped design an anticoagulation manager app for the CDC. She recently edited the newly published edition of the book, Transfusion Therapy: Clinical Principles and Practices, published by AABB, in its fourth edition
