We aim to foster success through cutting-edge technology, state-of-the-art facilities, and support for researchers.
Research is a core component of the UAB health system, and our pathology department's extramural research funding totals more than $20 million annually. Under the leadership of Cristina Magi-Galluzzi, M.D., Ph.D., Robert and Ruth Anderson Endowed Chair, and Selvarangan Ponnazhagan, Ph.D., Professor and Vice Chair for Research, the pathology program at UAB currently ranks 10th in NIH funding among all pathology departments in the U.S.
Our department strives to understand the molecular basis underlying a wide range of disease processes, identify new therapeutic targets, and develop new treatments for patients. Departmental research spans the range of fundamental mechanisms of disease to identification of biomarkers and development of novel therapeutics. Investigators are using innovative pre-clinical animal models of disease, analytical techniques, and bioinformatics and genomics.
UAB's Department of Pathology believes that educating the next generation of scientists and pathologists is the key to lasting success, and we provide meaningful, hands-on research opportunities for residents, fellows, graduate students, and medical students.
