Joanne Murphy-Ullrich, Ph.D., Professor, Molecular and Cellular Pathology, has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of two Elsevier journals Matrix Biology and Matrix Biology Plus. This appointment is a three-year term, effective September 2022.
Matrix Biology (established in 1980 as Collagen and Related Research) is a cutting-edge journal that is devoted to publishing the latest results in extracellular matrix research. The journal publishes original studies in cell and molecular biology, developmental biology, genetics, structural biology, chronobiology, infection and immunity, immunology, virology, signaling, disease mechanisms, and therapeutics related to the extracellular matrix and cellular interactions with the extracellular matrix. Its companion, Matrix Biology Plus, is an online open-access journal, publishing advancements in the field of matrix biology without a strict requirement for novel biological mechanisms.
The original journal was founded by Drs. Steffen Gay and Edward Miller, former UAB faculty. Editor-in-Chief John M. Whitelock, Ph.D., Professor, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia also completed post-doctoral studies at UAB in the early 1990s.
Dr. Murphy-Ullrich has completed nearly 15 years of service on the Executive Council of the American Society for Matrix Biology, most recently as president and past-president.
