The UAB Department of Pathology is excited to welcome two new faculty to the Division of Molecular & Cellular Pathology: Erin Eun-Young Ahn, Ph.D., as associate professor, and Vivek Nanda, Ph.D., as assistant professor.

Dr. Ahn joins the department as an associate professor in the Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology. She has most recently been an associate professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Mitchell Cancer Center at the University of South Alabama. Ahn earned her M.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology at Seoul National University, South Korea and her Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Pathology here at UAB. In 2017, Ahn was named the recipient of the Mayer Mitchell Award for Excellence in Cancer Research.The award is presented annually to a promising scientist at USA Mitchell Cancer Institute upon the recommendation of a faculty committee. It includes a $10,000 prize. The award was established in 2009 by USA Trustee Arlene Mitchell in memory of her late husband, Mayer Mitchell, a Mobile businessman, longtime USA trustee and formative figure in the establishment of MCI.

Ahn focuses her research on the regulation of gene expression in cancer development and progression, with a special interest in leukemia. In 2015, she was awarded a five-year $1.7 million R01 grant from the National Cancer Institute to study the role of the SON protein in the development of leukemia.

Dr. Nanda is joining the department as an assistant professor in the Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology. He most recently worked as an instructor at Stanford University in California. Nanda earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Rochester in New York. He is interested in identifying the heritable component of a wide range of cardiovascular diseases which include coronary artery disease and peripheral artery disease.
