Outgoing_Reception_1_2024.jpgMembers of the UAB Department of Pathology gathered for an outgoing reception for residents and fellows on May 31. Faculty, staff and trainees came together to celebrate at the Fennec with dinner and an awards ceremony.

A welcome by Brandi McCleskey, M.D., Director of the Pathology Residency Program was followed by opening remarks by Cristina Magi-Galluzzi, M.D., Ph.D., Chair and C. Bruce Alexander Endowed Professor, and a special message delivered by Sarah M. Bean, M.D., FCAP, Professor, Duke University School of Medicine’s Department of Pathology.

The Leonard H. Robinson Award for Resident Education in Anatomic Pathology was presented by Brooke Bartow, M.D., to Frida Rosenblum, M.D., Associate Professor, Anatomic Pathology. Jacob Havens, D.O., gave the Shu T. Huang Award for Excellence in Laboratory Medicine Education to Megan Amerson-Brown, Ph.D., CIC, MLS, Assistant Professor, Laboratory Medicine.

The Roger Denio Baker Prize in Anatomic Pathology was also presented by Thomas Winokur, M.D., Interim Co-Division Director, Anatomic Pathology, to Kyle Joseph, D.O. This award, presented to the resident demonstrating excellence in AP, was established in Dr. Baker’s name. Dr. Roger Denio Baker became the medical school’s first full-time faculty member on December 1, 1944, and the first departmental chair appointed by Dean Roy D. Kracke. Kenneth Fallon, M.D., retired Associate Professor, Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology, presented the Roy D. Kracke Award for Best Presentation in Anatomic Pathology Seminar Series to Amy Theriault, D.O. Ona Faye-Petersen, M.D., Professor Emerita, presented the Outstanding Trainee Teaching Award in honor of the late Dr. Alexander Feldman to Dr. Amy Theriault.

Awards in Laboratory Medicine followed including the PEARL Award, endowed by former resident and UAB Heersink School of Medicine MSTP student Dr. Stephen Brosette, which recognizes a resident who demonstrates excellence in patient care, education, and research in Laboratory Medicine. This award was presented by Gene Siegal, M.D., Ph.D., Robert W. Mowry Endowed Professor, to Mishi Bhushan, M.D. The Jay M. McDonald Award for Best Presentation in Laboratory Medicine Seminar, honoring former Department Chair Dr. Jay McDonald, was also presented to Dr. Kyle Joseph by Aishwarya Ravindran, M.D..

McCleskey acknowledged this year’s outgoing chief resident for Education and Outreach, Michael Robinson, D.O., and announced incoming chief in the same role, Dr. Amy Theriault. Dr. Thomas Winokur acknowledged this year’s outgoing chief resident for Anatomic Pathology, Dr. Brooke Bartow, and announced incoming chief, Dr. Kyle Joseph. Dr. Gene Siegal awarded Dr. Jacob Havens, as outgoing chief of Clinical Pathology, and announced incoming chief Caroline Stanek, M.D.

Dr. McCleskey presented this year’s RISE-ING Star Awards to Reham Soliman, M.D., Ph.D., PGY1, Drs. Kyle Joseph, PGY2, Brooke Bartow, PGY3, Jacob Havens, PGY4 and Mishi Bhushan, single track.

Dr. McCleskey presented the outgoing residents with certificates of completion. They are:

Dr. Thomas Winokur presented Surgical Pathology fellowship certificates to Sarah Anderson, D.O. and Daniel Jackson, M.D.

Daniel Dye, M.D., Associate Professor, Forensics, presented the Forensic fellowship certificate to Michael Williams, M.D., M.Sc.

Adam Wilberger, M.D., Assistant Professor, Laboratory Medicine, presented Hematopathology fellowship certificates to Geoffrey Herndon, D.O., and Sarah DePew, D.O.

Shuko Harada, M.D., Professor and director of the Molecular Genetic Pathology fellowship, presented a certificate to Ammoura Ibrahim, M.D.

Rati Chkheidze, M.D., Assistant Professor, Neuropathology, presented the Neuropathology fellowship certificate to Brandon Maveal, M.D.

Dr. Magi-Galluzzi presented the Genitourinary Pathology fellowship certificate to Frances Gomez Gonzalez, M.D.

Andrea Kahn, M.D., Professor, Anatomic Pathology, presented the Women’s Health fellowship to Gagandeep Kaur, M.D.

Sameer Al Diffalha, M.D., Associate Professor, Anatomic Pathology, and Vice Chair for Outreach, presented a certificate of completion to Fatme Ghandour, M.D., Clinical Research Fellow.

The reception concluded with remarks by Dr. McCleskey, followed by group photos and fellowship among colleagues. Special thanks to Monica Henderson, Program Manager for training programs, Susan Mills, Program Coordinator for fellowships, Fatima Igdoura, Program Manager for the Chair’s Office, and Stephanie Hobbs, Executive Assistant for the Chair's Office, for organizing this special event.
