Renal damage secondary to Vesicoureteral reflux occurs in approximately 25% of patients. Persersistent reflux increases the risk of pyelonephritis which can lead to frank renal insufficiency.

Prevention of vesicoureteral reflux
Bladder volumes must be kept below the ureter pressure threshold.
  • >400ccs for females
  • >500ccs for males.
Treatment Considerations
Patients with persistent high timed catherization volumes should either catherize more frequently and/or adjust their fluid intake.  If conservative measures are ineffective, the patient should see a urologist for additional treatment options such as a suprapubic catheter.  High bladder volumes can cause renal damage relatively quickly and should not be ignored.
