Adam Cohen, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, earned his medical degree from the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL. Dr. Cohen completed his pediatric residency and his pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, AL. His clinical interests/major research include: general gastroenterology, pediatric pancreatic disease, cystic fibrosis and obesity.

Christopher “Miles” Fowler, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology, earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA. Dr. Fowler completed his pediatric residency at Palmetto Health/University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC and his pediatric pulmonology fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, AL. His clinical interests/major research include: general pulmonary, BPD, cystic fibrosis and sleep disorders in children with a cleft palate.

Nazia "Zia" Kabani, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Neonatology and Pediatric Infectious Diseases, earned her medical degree from the University of Vermont, Burlington, VT. Dr. Kabani completed her pediatric residency and her combined neonatology and pediatric infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, AL. She also completed her MSPH in Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham during her fellowship. Her clinical interests/major research include: looking at markers for late onset sepsis in neonates. She has also worked on cytomegalovirus research, including looking at viral load as a predictor for hearing loss in infants with congenital cytomegalovirus. She is interested in infection control and antibiotic stewardship, particularly in the neonatal ICU. She will have a joint appointment in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases.

Malgorzata Kasztan, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, completed her doctoral training Pharmacology and Laboratory Medicine Department at the Medical University of Gdansk, Poland. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Medicine Division of Nephrology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, AL. Her major research interest is to study functional significance of renal iron/heme homeostasis using models of chronic kidney injury. She is particularly interested in the area of renal iron/heme handling in the progressive sickle cell disease-associated nephropathy.

Vivek Shukla, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Neonatology, earned his medical degree from Sardar Patel University, India. Dr. Shukla completed his pediatric residency at the State University of New York in Brooklyn, NY, and his neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, AL. His clinical /major research interests include the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence for improving perinatal outcomes and interventional clinical trials. 

Ryne Simpson, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology, earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in Memphis, TN. Dr. Simpson completed his pediatric residency at Children’s Mercy Hospitals & Clinics in Kansas City, MO and his pediatric pulmonology fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati, OH. His clinical interests/major research include: chronic mechanical ventilation, aerodigestive care, flexible bronchoscopy.
