Stacy Tanaka, M.D., M.S., joins the UAB Department of Urology as professor and chief of pediatric urology.
Dr. Tanaka has joined UAB and Children's of Alabama after spending 12 years at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville. She will replace Dr. David Joseph, who has served in that capacity since 1986. Dr. Joseph will remain on faculty and continue to provide clinical care.
Dr. Tanaka earned her medical degree from the University of California (UC) in Davis, CA and stayed at UC-Davis for her urology residency. She completed her pediatric urology fellowship at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and remained on faculty. Dr. Tanaka’s research focus is in neurogenic bladder and serves as the Scientific Vice-Chair of the CDC Urologic Management Protocol to Preserve Initial Renal Function (UMPIRE) in young children with spina bifida. Dr. Tanaka also serves on the American Board of Urology examination committee, and is chair of the US News and World Report Urology Working Group. We are very fortunate to have been successful with her recruitment and look forward to her leadership and engagement at UAB and Children's of Alabama.
