The Sparkman Center began this initiative in 2019 to assist with funding internal UAB pilot grant application. Projects that support the Sparkman Center’s mission of promoting global health are selected for funding and include research projects, public health practice, and global health & development projects.

Erica Bjornstad, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Nephrology, received a 2021 Pilot Project Grant for her project, "Rapid Detection of Pediatric Trauma-related Acute Kidney Injury in Zambia".

Nora Switchenko, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Neonatology, received a 2021 Pilot Project Grant for her project, "Low-Cost Pulse Oximetry for Oxygen Saturation Measurement in Neonates in Zambia".
