Bill Britt, M.D., Pediatric Infectious Disease, will be the Keynote Speaker at the 42nd Annual International Herpesvirus Workshop (IHW) in Ghent, Belgium, on July 29 - Aug. 2, 2017. He will present, "Cellular Membrane Reorganization and HCMV Assembly."
The UAB Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit created the Golden Week program to improve outcomes for infants born prematurely at 28 weeks’ gestation or earlier. The program has resulted in a 30 percent relative risk reduction in infant mortality or severe intraventricular hemorrhage within the first week of life.“Our goal is to provide the best care for each of our patients,” said Vivek Lal, M.D., assistant professor in Neonatology and director of the Golden Week program. “Through the Golden Week program, we have standardized care that infants receive during their first week of life, ultimately improving their survival rates. The program provides guidance for physicians and nurses on clinical and nonclinical aspects of caring for an extremely preterm newborn.”
Recently, UAB’s Golden Week program was recognized by the Gage Awards for Innovation and Excellence, which honors the outstanding work of members of America’s Essential Hospitals. The strategic priorities of America’s Essential Hospitals include identifying and disseminating evidence-based best practices that enhance the quality of care for all — especially vulnerable people.

Michelle Kong, M.D., Pediatric Critical Care, has been named the 2017 recipient of the Odessa Woolfolk Community Service Award. This award was established by UAB to recognize one of its faculty who has rendered outstanding service to UAB's community. A formal ceremony honoring Dr. Kong and this year's recipients of the President's Awards will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m. at the UAB Alumni House.
Five UAB School of Medicine faculty projects were recently funded through an AMC21 initiative, giving NIH-funded investigators incentive to submit a second R01. The projects, chosen based on scientific merit, were eligible for $50,000 per year for a project period of up to two years, pending appropriate progress and achieving benchmarks. The goal is to have a new funded R01 by the second year. Trent Tipple, M.D., Neonatology, received funding for his project titled, “Harnessing the Anti-inflammatory and Antibacterial Effects of Thioredoxin Reductase-1 Inhibition to Treat Acute Lung Injury.”
Corey Falcon, M.D., Pediatrics Hematology & Oncology fellow, has been awarded a St. Baldrick's Foundation Fellowship award for his work titled, “Generation of novel suicide gene modified anti-CD19 CAR redirected T cells." For more information on the award and St. Baldrick's Foundation, click here.
