Personal illness or injury can significantly impact the lives of individuals and their families in countless ways. The UAB Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has been one of the Southeast's foremost providers of comprehensive rehabilitation care since 1964. Our physiatrists are Board Certified devoted exclusively to the practice of rehabilitation medicine, utilizing advanced research, technology, and expertise to provide the highest level of individualized care for adolescents and adult patients recovering from a broad variety of health problems.
Inpatient Services
UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center is the hub for inpatient services. As an integral part of the UAB Health System, our PM&R physicians lead an interdisciplinary team that includes specialists from Rehab Nursing Services, Rehabilitation Therapy Services and Medical Social Services. Our specialists are devoted exclusively to the practice of rehabilitation medicine, utilizing advanced research, technology, and expertise to provide the highest level of patient care.
We provide comprehensive rehabilitation for patients with medically complicated conditions in need for multiple therapy interventions to improve their functional abilities.

- Amputations
- Arthritis
- Brain injury (Both traumatic and acquired)
- Burns
- Cerebrovascular accident (Stroke)
- Congenital deformity
- Hip fractures
- Major multiple trauma
- Neurological disorders (including Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease,Polyneuropathy, Guillain-Barre and others)
- Orthopedic Conditions
- Spinal cord injury
- Conditions made worse by illness (including COPD, Heart Disease and others)

Rehab Therapy Services
Rehabilitation Therapy Services is the heart of inpatient care. Under the leadership of our PM&R physicians, licensed and/or certified therapists provide patients with a minimum of 3 hours of direct, personalized treatment each day to maximize functional recovery with a goal of improving quality of life and reintegrating them to home and community.
Treatment plans may include:
- Physical Therapy to help improve overall health and restore functional skills and abilities such as bed mobility, transfers, walking, range of motion, and balance.
- Occupational Therapy to utilize adaptive equipment such as splints and braces to improve activities of daily living and help patients with problem solving, safety awareness, money management, and other issues.
- Speech-Language Therapy to treat problems with swallowing, sounds, rhythm and fluency, and voice.
- Music Therapy to provide relaxing, entertaining interventions for anxiety, depression, pain and emotional/spiritual support.
- Recreational Therapy to provide patients with leisure activities to ease the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive transition back to community living.

Our medical clinics serve as an integral part of the continuum of care for patients to receive the specialized care needed to maintain long-term health and function.

Our psychology clinics provide specialized services in several areas of rehab psychology and neuropsychology.

Rehab Therapy Clinics
Our patients have easy access to the UAB Health System network, which means most outpatient services can be managed by a team of specialists from a range of disciplines working together and contributing unique skills and expertise to provide patient-focused care.

Orthotics and Prosthetics Lab
The Orthotics and Prosthetics Lab offers practitioners and technicians that are certified with The American Board for Certification of Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics (ABC) and/or The Board of Certification/Accreditation, International (BOC). Our office is further recognized as an ABC Accredited Facility as well as a National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE).
