At Beacon Recovery, we offer an individualized approach to the assessment and treatment of alcohol and substance dependence in a world class hospital. Our staff is comprised of licensed and certified counselors and social workers who work individually and in groups with patients to provide thoughtful and caring treatment of addiction. We understand the stress and anxiety that often accompany the realization that a problem has developed and know how concerns about family and work responsibilities can interfere in a person’s willingness to seek help.
At the Addiction Recovery Program we can provide an opportunity for a confidential evaluation and discuss the treatment options available through our program. Our medical director will meet with you personally to determine the best level of care to meet your needs. We offer residential and outpatient treatment; many of our patients have been successfully treated in our Outpatient Program, which allows an individual to attend programming from 8:30am – 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. This enables a patient to meet family obligations while still receiving treatment for an addiction.
Many aspects of our program are highlighted in the following pages. Please feel free to contact us by telephone or email if you have any questions. A response can be expected within one working day.

Admissions
All individuals seeking admission must first complete a free phone evaluation with a counselor to determine which program is the best fit for their needs. This evaluation is sometimes called a “state assessment” or “ASAM” and is required for admission to any program in Alabama that is certified by the Department of Mental Health. The evaluation takes about 1-2 hours to complete. At the end of the evaluation, the counselor will discuss treatment options that are best suited for you. Sometimes we recommend treatments that we do not offer (such as residential treatment), and in those cases we are happy to forward the evaluation to other agencies throughout the state that offer those programs, if that is your preference.
After the initial evaluation, if you are admitted to one of our programs, you will work with your intake counselor to complete your plan of treatment, which will outline the various services we recommend. You then will be assigned to a primary counselor to begin therapy, and, depending on your needs, you may be given an appointment for further evaluation by one of our physicians.
For questions about admissions to our program, please email Beacon@uabmc.edu or call 205-917-3733 to get started. Follow the prompts for Beacon Recovery (#3) and then the Assessment Center (#1).
Costs
Program fees are based on a sliding scale, depending on household income. There is no cost for treatment for individuals with full Medicaid coverage. The initial assessment is free – regardless of income – and no one is turned away due to an inability to pay. Beacon Recovery does not accept private insurance.
Our Programs
Beacon Recovery
UAB Beacon Recovery is an outpatient substance abuse treatment program for adults and adolescents. Our treatment programs are certified by the Alabama Department of Mental Health. We serve individuals who are either uninsured or have Medicaid coverage. While many people are referred to us by various legal and medical entities, a professional referral is not necessary, and approximately 50% of the individuals we help are self-referred.
Assessment • Outpatient • Intensive Outpatient • Day Treatment
UAB Beacon Recovery provides assessment and substance use treatment for adults and adolescents age 13-18. We offer a variety of treatment options tailored to meet the individual needs and recovery goals of each patient. Our clinical team is comprised of licensed and certified counselors with expertise in addiction and recovery, trauma, grief, relationships, and family dynamics. The program adheres to evidence-based practice models to ensure the highest quality of care, and we ensure that patients and their families are part of the treatment process, from admission through completion. To accomodate busy schedules we offer treatment groups in the morning, afternoon, evening and weekends.
The initial assessment is free - regardless of income - and no one is turned away due to an inability to pay. Program fees range from $0 to $100 per month and are set based on a sliding scale.
