Training Program Description

Fellows gain experiences in general and specialty clinics that expose them to a range of highly complex medical, psychiatric, and neurological disorders. Fellows rotate through two year-long major rotations and two minor rotations. The first year includes a rotation in the General Neuropsychology: Medically Complex Rotation. Other rotations are determined upon interest from the trainee and supervisor availability and are primarily selected from the opportunities described below, though other options may become available. Additionally, one day is dedicated to a combination of didactic training and research time.

Research

Fellows will receive protected time (10-20%) for research. Faculty from the neuropsychology program are actively involved in ongoing clinical research in the areas of neurosurgical treatment, naltrexone cognitive impact on neuropsychiatric Lupus, cognitive effects of COVID-19, intervention for brain health, treatment of substance abuse/psychedelics, stroke and traumatic brain injury, stroke and cerebrovascular contributions to neurodegeneration, suicide prevention, circadian disorders, and pain, sleep and health disparities, among others.

Neuropsychology Faculty

As neuropsychologists, we are clinical faculty members of UAB Heersink School of Medicine. The primary neuropsychology training faculty have primary appointments in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology. Additional training faculty come from the departments of Neurology and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Requirements

  • Completion of an APA/CPA accredited doctoral program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) including defense of doctoral dissertation
  • Completion of APA-accredited predoctoral internship
  • Desire to work in an academic medicine setting within a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary team environment
  • U.S. Citizenship is not required

Highly desired criteria

  • Past clinical practical and internship experience in an academic medical setting
  • Strong foundation in clinical neuropsychology and interest in medical setting-oriented careers
  • Graduate-level training and clinical experiences in a scientist-practitioner model
