Bio
I was born and raised in Brewton, Alabama, before attending the University of Alabama where I studied chemical engineering and biology before attending UAB as a first generation medical student. It was in medical school where I discovered the wonderful world of radiology, and I am delighted to be able to continue my radiology training at the institution I've come to love so much over the past several years. When I am outside of the hospital, my favorite things to do include hiking at Oak Mountain, making pasta from scratch, playing video games, watching horror movies, and hanging out with my dog Olive (she's the best).
What do you love most about being a UAB Radiology Resident?
My favorite thing about being a UAB Radiology Resident so far would have to be the incredibly supportive community, both in terms of co-residents and faculty.

Ahmed M. Khalaf, M.D., was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, and also spent four years living in Paris, France, where he learned French at a young age. He pursued his passion for the field of radiology during his last year of medical school by travelling to the United States in 2013 as a visiting international medical student at two universities, including the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). While on the last day of his radiology rotation at UAB, he met his future wife. His love of radiology led him to meet the love of his life! After overcoming many obstacles, both he and his wife now work at UAB and have a beautiful daughter together. After completing his internship and obtaining his medical license in Egypt, he returned to the U.S. to work as a senior research assistant in the computational research lab at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Imaging Physics Department. In 2017, Khalaf joined the UAB Department of Radiology as a research fellow. In 2019, he was promoted to become the first CT Radiologist Assistant (CTRA) at UAB. After years of working closely with the UAB radiology department, he was thrilled to match at UAB for his postgraduate radiology training. In his spare time, he enjoys repairing/detailing cars, watching Formula 1 championships, and cooking Mediterranean/Egyptian dishes. From California to Florida, Sterling Jones, M.D., has called a lot of places home, but he considers himself a Virginian at heart. He met his wife in college out west and is the father of two spunky girls. When he’s not mastering the fine art of picking mashed pasta and peas out of high chair crevices, you'll often find him prowling the neighborhood with his daughters, on the hunt for wildflowers, insects, birds, and any other critters brave enough to cross their path. Otherwise he enjoys perusing DK Smithsonian coffee table books, struggling to stay caught up with the Disney cinematic universe, and harnessing the power of AI chatbots to pretend to be a programmer.

I was born at a very young age, spending my formative and many subsequent years in the beautiful state of Utah. I grew up spoiled, skiing "The Greatest Snow on Earth," and enjoying the renowned National Parks Southern Utah offers. I met my wife during undergrad at BYU, and was married with two children before beginning medical school. Since that time we have added two more children to our crew! I was fortunate enough to match in the Integrated Interventional Radiology program at UAB, where I have trained under the auspices of many talented attendings and colleagues, including my co-integrated IR resident Dr. Eric Keasler, who believes his procedural skills are unmatched. My family and I love our home life in the suburbs outside of Birmingham. We've found many beautiful outdoor adventures to enjoy. Our current post-training plans include a job with Radiology Associates, PA, working in Northwest Arkansas.
