Ahmed Amer, M.D., grew up in Egypt, where he finished medical school at Mansoura University in 2012. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Cancer Physics and Engineering Lab at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston Texas in 2016. He completed a transitional year residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit MI. His diagnostic radiology residency and abdominal imaging fellowship were completed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He enjoys resident teaching and collaboration with colleagues from other disciplines. His research interests are pancreatic cancer imaging, and dual energy CT. Jordan Perchik, M.D., completed his undergraduate degree at Rhodes College and medical education at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, both in Memphis, TN. Perchik completed his diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he served as chief resident. Perchik also completed an Abdominal Imaging and Informatics Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham prior to joining faculty in 2023. Perchik is the President and Co-Founder of Artificial Intelligence in Radiology Education (AIRE) and has led the Artificial Intelligence Literacy Course since its inception in 2020. Perchik holds positions on multiple Artificial Intelligence and Informatics committees for the Society of Abdominal Radiology, Association of University Radiologists, and Alabama Academy of Radiology. Perchik has worked closely with LGBTQ advocacy groups at UAB and in the greater Birmingham community. His research interests include resident education and artificial intelligence in radiology. Janelle West, M.D., obtained her undergraduate degrees at Birmingham-Southern College and secured her doctorate at UAB School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama. She completed a Transitional Year internship at Brookwood Baptist Health before leaving Birmingham to continue training in Diagnostic Radiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. She returned to Alabama for subspecialized training in Abdominal Imaging and was presented with the Outstanding Fellow Award for dedication and excellence in teaching at the conclusion of her fellowship. Elainea N. Smith, M.D. completed her undergraduate degree at Colorado College and medical school at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. She then completed her residency training in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), during which she acted as Chief Resident during her final year. She completed her accelerated fellowship in Abdominal Imaging at the University of Alabama at Birmingham prior to joining the faculty at UAB. Clinically, she practices a full spectrum of abdominal imaging including fluoroscopy, CT, MR, US, and non-vascular procedures. Her areas of interest include hepatobiliary imaging, most specifically diffuse liver disease, and medical student outreach in order to recruit more applicants into the field of radiology. She serves on the Society of Abdominal Radiology Li-Rads Post Treatment Response Working Group, Diffuse Liver Disease Focused Panel, and Early Career Committee. Dr. Stanley served as Chair of Radiology from 1982-2002. He came to UAB from the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, Washington University in St. Louis, where he was among the earliest investigators of computed tomography. This led to the creation of his (and co-editors) widely used textbook Computed Body Tomography with MRI Correlation. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th editions have numerous co-authors from UAB. Dr. Stanley has served prominently at the national level of many radiological organizations. He was appointed to the Board of Chancellors of the American College of Radiology and served for 7 yrs., finishing as the Vice-President of the College in his final year. He also served as a Trustee of the American Board of Radiology for 8 yrs. He has been an officer and president of the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Society of Uroradiology, the Society of Computed Body Tomography, and the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments. Following his time as chair, he was named the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Roentgenology in 2003. Dr. Stanley is a Gold Medalist recipient of RSNA’s highest honor. As a lead authority in the early development of body CT imaging, Dr. Stanley is known globally for his lectures on body imaging and is the author of over 180 scientific publications. Dr. Stanley’s leadership and commitments continue to be recognized nationally, as well as his mentoring legacy of multiple national leaders. In addition to being named a RSNA Gold Medalist, he is a former recipient of the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) Gold Medal, 2014 Society of Computed Body Tomography and Magnetic Resonance (SCBT-MR) Gold Medal, and the 2014 Walter B. Cannon Medal for distinguished contributions by the Society of Abdominal Radiology (SAR). As a world-renowned abdominal radiologist, it is a true honor for him to have served for 32 years in the Radiology Department at UAB. |

Constantine M. Burgan, M.D., received his BS in chemistry from Towson University in Towson, Maryland, followed by medical school at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at the Allegheny Health Network where he served as chief resident. Burgan completed a fellowship in Cross-Sectional Imaging at Johns Hopkins Hospital, then joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins as a body radiologist prior to joining UAB as faculty in abdominal imaging in 2017. Zarzour, vice chair of education, chief of GI Modality and associate professor in the Abdominal Imaging Section, completed her undergraduate training at Auburn University, followed by medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She completed residency training in diagnostic radiology at UAB where she served as chief resident and completed fellowship training in abdominal imaging at UAB. Zarzour has served as the program director of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program since 2017. Michelle L. Robbin, MD, MS, FACR, FAIUM, FSRU completed a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. She attended medical school at the Mayo Clinic, followed by an adult internal medicine internship at California Pacific Medical Center. Dr. Robbin completed a radiology residency and ultrasound fellowship at the University of California San Francisco. Thereafter, she joined the faculty in the abdominal imaging section of the Department of Radiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, as chief of ultrasound. Robert E. Koehler, M.D., FACR, received an AB Degree from Johns Hopkins University and an MD from Cornell University Medical College. He was an exchange student in Tropical Medicine at the Hospital das Clinicas, University of Bahia, Salvador, Brazil. He was a full grade surgeon at the United States Public Health Service and a member of the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Koehler served his radiology residency at the University of California in San Francisco and continued there with his Fellowship in Gastrointestinal Radiology. Since coming to the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Dr. Koehler has served as a professor, then as the Witten-Stanley Endowed Chair of Radiology from 2003-2009, and has served as director/chair/or committee member on numerous local, national and international committees. Dr. Koehler’s area of clinical practice is Gastrointestinal Radiology. |

After serving as professor and chair and Witten-Stanley Endowed Chair of Radiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine (HSOM) for 13 years, Cheri L. Canon, M.D., FACR, FSAR, FAAWR transitioned to the roles of University of Alabama Health Services Foundation (HSF) president and UAB Health System chief physician executive. She completed her undergraduate training at the University of Texas at Austin, followed by medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch. After completing her residency training in diagnostic radiology at UAB, she joined the faculty in the abdominal imaging section. She sits on UAB Medicine Joint Operating Leadership Council and is a trustee on the HSF board. Canon served as an oral examiner for the American Board of Radiology (ABR) for eleven years, a member of the Board of Trustees, and now sits on its Board of Governors as the president-elect. She was the vice president of the American College of Radiology (ACR), chancellor on the board, and the chair of the ACR Commission on Education. As a member of the inaugural ACR Radiology Leadership Institute board, she helped launch a comprehensive leadership development program in partnership with the most recognized business schools. She is a fellow of the college and received the ACR Gold Medal in 2021, its highest honor. She received the Alabama Academy of Radiology’s Silver Medal in the spring of 2022. Canon a past-president of the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments (SCARD) and the co-creator and co-director of LEAD, a women’s leadership development program jointly developed by SCARD and GE Healthcare. She previously served on the leadership, including president and the executive board, for Momentum, a Birmingham women’s leadership organization. In recognition of her advocacy for women, she was recognized with the American Association of Women in Radiology Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award in 2020. In 2022, Canon was recognized by the University of Texas Medical Branch John Sealy School of Medicine Alumni Association’s highest honor, the Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumni Award. |

Dr. Lockhart completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi where he received a BA in Chemistry. He earned a Master’s in Public Health in outcomes research to improve his research skills. His academic interests and research have primarily involved vascular ultrasound, MRI, and issues concerning public health. His NIH-sponsored research has focused on pelvic floor MRI as part of the Pelvic Floor Disorders Network. Nationally, he serves as the Chair of the ACR Appropriateness Committee, consisting of over 800 physicians who determine scores for decision support at hospitals across the nation. He is a member of the Executive Board of the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound and the Ultrasound Certifying Exam Committee of the American Board of Radiology. His editorial service includes editorial board roles in four national journals and Deputy Editor of the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine. Desiree E. Morgan, M.D. is the vice chair of faculty affairs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is a former vice chair of education and program director of the UAB Diagnostic Radiology residency program. In her tenure as PD she led the residency through a formal strategic planning process in 2015 that is bearing fruit in the dynamic program you will find in the department today. Prior to 2015 Dr. Morgan served as the UAB Department of Radiology vice chair of clinical research, where her duties centered on facilitating scholarly achievement and fostering collaborative research involving state of the art clinical imaging for physicians at all levels of training. She is a member of the abdominal imaging section and her clinical subspecialty focus in general is gastrointestinal radiology and in particular imaging of the pancreas and hepatobiliary system. Dr. Morgan’s departmental role as director of MRI from 2005- 2015 enabled her to introduce new MR imaging techniques to UAB, including physiologic MR image acquisition and MR biomarker evaluation of intra-abdominal tumors. She is a tireless champion of abdominal and oncologic dual energy and spectral CT at UAB. Since joining the faculty in 1993, Dr. Morgan has mentored numerous medical students, residents, and junior faculty in a variety of preclinical and clinical research endeavors. Her research interests include abdominal dual energy CT, physiologic abdominal MR imaging, and neoplastic and inflammatory conditions of the pancreas. Dr. Morgan is a senior scientist in the Experimental Therapeutics Program and served as the inaugural director of the Human Imaging Shared Facility of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, where she continues to apply her expertise in oncologic imaging to create a systematic approach to tumor imaging surveillance and the development and utilization of imaging biomarkers in patients participating in therapeutic clinical trials. Dr. Morgan has won numerous teaching awards including the HSOM Dean’s Excellence Award for Teaching and the Argus Award, multiple Outstanding Faculty Lecturer Medical Student Radiology Elective Awards, multiple UAB Department of Radiology Teacher of the Year Distinguished Faculty Awards, and Multiple Louisville Slugger (senior radiology resident) Awards. She is a seventeen time recipient of the “Top Ten” Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education; in 2021 the Desiree E. Morgan Faculty Award for Continual Excellence in Teaching was named in her honor and is bestowed on faculty who also achieve greater than 15 “Top Ten” awards. In 2013 she served as the Society of Abdominal Radiology Igor Laufer Traveling Professor, an honor reserved for outstanding physician educators. In 2016 Dr. Morgan was awarded the UAB Brewer-Heslin Award for Professionalism in Medicine, an honor reserved for the UAB Heersink School of Medicine faculty member who upholds the highest ideals of integrity, honesty, and concern for their patients. She is a 2017 graduate and grateful supporter of Momentum, a 2022 Heersink Innovation Fellow, and participant of the UAB Medicine Innovation Academy. Dr. Morgan is a fellow and current vice president of the Society of Advanced Body Imaging and is both a fellow and former member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Abdominal Radiology, serving as president in 2020. She is a governor of the American Board of Radiology and previously served as an abdominal trustee and vice chair for diagnostic radiology for the ABR. She serves on multiple national committees for the American Roentgen Ray Society, The Association of University Radiologists, and the Radiological Society of North America. She developed a national patient centered care curriculum for Radiology trainees for the RSNA in July 2018, and created the Clinician Educator Pathway for UAB Radiology residents in 2019. She served on the steering committee and continues to contribute as a mentor for the UAB Healthcare Educators Academy. Dr. Morgan has served the Heersink School of Medicine as Lead Mentor for the Barfield Carter Learning Community for the past three years and looks forward to many more. In her new role as the inaugural vice chair for faculty affairs in the Department of Radiology she looks forward to increasing opportunity for development and mentoring for faculty at all levels of service and engagement.
