UAB's residency training sites include a total of six external-beam radiation therapy treatment machines, a high-dose rate (HDR) remote afterloader, and two CT-simulators. We have the most modern linear accelerators, including Varian Edge and TrueBeam systems with three-dimensional on-board imaging.
We utilize real-time position management (RPM) respiratory tracking, Calypso, and Optical Surface Mapping System (OSMS) for real-time motion management and patient tracking during treatment delivery. High-dose rate brachytherapy treatments are performed with our Varian remote afterloader, for both interstitial and intracavitary treatments.
Each resident has a desk with dual monitors in our residents’ room adjoining our clinic space. Daily tumor boards, conferences and didactic sessions are held in a recently renovated auditorium within our department.
Our department recently expanded its wet laboratory space, now totaling over 500 square feet. Meet our Research faculty.
Our department is located in close proximity to the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, and is attached via skywalk to the 1,157 bed University Hospital.

Partnership with Varian Medical Systems
We are a proud partner with Varian Medical Systems, and serve as a Varian demonstration site. We also utilize our radiosurgery expertise to host our SRS/SBRT training course, a three-day conference that discusses and demonstrates stereotactic radiation (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation (SBRT) delivery with Eclipse™ and TrueBeam™.
