General Surgery Global Health Track

This dedicated 5-year long track is aimed towards residents with a specific interest in global surgery such that they have a meaningful global surgery educational experience throughout their entire training rather than a short one-time international experience. The track consists of several components to be completed by the time of graduation. These residents participate in a global surgery-related workgroup of a national or international professional surgical society. There is a required reading of 30 journal articles and writing a brief reflection about each one, where the residents can choose their own articles, and a large databank is provided. They complete online global surgery teaching case scenarios as well as develop their own global surgery didactic lecture given to students or other trainees. They complete a certified global surgery skills course and are given priority for PGY 4 international electives.

Global Partnerships

Our Global Surgery Program offers trainees unique opportunities to engage in surgical education guided by multidisciplinary medical practitioners and clinicians at UAB and partnerships with local and global resources.
