Residents participate in all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery, learning advanced techniques such as:
- Off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting
- Minimally-invasive and robotic valve surgery
- Robotic thoracic surgery including benign esophageal disease
- Transplant/VAD/ECMO
- Aortic surgery
- Endovascular techniques (TAVR, TEVAR, Mitra-clip)
- Complex congenital heart surgery
Historically, the annual case volume for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery has had >2000 cardiac cases, >800 thoracic cases, >300 congenital cases, >50 thoracic transplants, >25 VADs, and >400 TAVRs. The rotation schedule for each individual resident can be customized to their interests, accommodating away rotations and/or extra training in specific fields.

Residents have been able to comfortably meet minimum case numbers for their non-track specialty (ie. thoracic cases for cardiac-track residents and cardiac cases for thoracic-track residents).
