Champ Lyons was born May 21, 1907, in Lancaster, PA. He received his early education in Mobile, Alabama, and following graduation from the University of Alabama in 1927, he entered Harvard Medical School where he received his M.D. degree in 1931. He was a member of both Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his internship and residency training at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Lyons’ major contributions were in the areas of surgical infections and vascular surgery.
In July of 1965, Dr. Lyons was finishing his rounds with his residents when he announced he had one more case to present—his own. He produced his brain scan which showed a lesion occupying the left cerebral space. On Aug. 3, 1965, a craniotomy was performed, and in two months, Dr. Lyons passed away. Though his career was cut short, Dr. Lyons’ impact on the medical world was in no way lessened. He taught by example and was truly a leader in the art and science of surgery.

About Arnold G. Diethlem
Dr. Arnold G. Diethelm’s career at UAB began in 1967 when he joined the Department of Surgery at the invitation of Dr. John W. Kirklin. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Diethelm received his B.A. degree from Washington State University in 1953 and his M.D. from Cornell Medical College in 1958.
Joining the faculty at UAB upon the completion of his two-year fellowship at Harvard, Diethelm accepted the challenge of building a nationally recognized transplantation program from the ground up. The first kidney transplant in Alabama took place in 1968, followed by the first heart transplant in the Southeast in 1981. These milestones were followed by the first liver transplant in the state in 1983, the first simultaneous pancreas/kidney transplant in 1988 and the first lung transplant in 1989.
Diethelm is the author or co-author of more than 210 publications in peer-reviewed journals, has served as a member of 26 surgical societies, as well as the chair of the UAB Department of Surgery from 1982 to 1999, and has been honored with numerous memberships, awards, visiting professorships and appointments.
Diethelm recalls one of the highlights of his career in 1974, when he was appointed visiting scientist in the Division of Surgical Science and the Division of Cryobiology at the Clinical Research Centre in Middlesex, England. Working in the field of immunology under the distinguished Sir Peter Medawar, the experience led to a lifelong interest in the field of immunological and tolerance-inducing medicine. His research led to pioneering work in the field of transplant tolerance, and because of his dedication, UAB has emerged as a leader in the exploration of new immunosuppressive agents.
Under Diethelm’s leadership, UAB’s renal transplant program has become one of the largest and busiest in the nation. In addition, Diethelm has helped develop the Alabama Organ and Tissue Procurement Centers, expanding supply of critical bone substance for bone allograft transplantation.
The UAB School of Medicine awarded Diethelm its highest award by naming him the Distinguished Faculty Lecturer in 1994.
The Arnold G. Diethelm Lectureship in Surgical Sciences was founded to foster the type of pioneering vision and dedicated work for the betterment of medicine that Dr. Arnold G. Diethelm exemplifies.

About Charles Breaux
Dr. Charles W. Breaux, Sr. was born in Gueydan, Louisiana, in July 1931. He graduated with honors from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and began his career as a chemical engineer at Humble Oil and Refining in Baton Rouge. While working there, he met Ann Kemp, a chemist at Ethyl Corporation, and they married in 1955. After marrying, Charles studied medicine at LSU Medical School in New Orleans. He completed a surgical residency at the United States Public Health Service Hospital in New Orleans and served as a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at Tulane.
In 1972, Dr. and Mrs. Breaux moved to Birmingham with their family to help open Mercy—later Cooper Green—Hospital and dedicated their lives to improving the quality of indigent healthcare in Alabama. During his time there, Dr. Breaux served as Chief of Surgery, Chief of Staff and President of the Jefferson Clinic P.C. He also pioneered bariatric surgery as a treatment for morbid obesity, diabetes and sleep apnea, conditions endemic to the patient population at the hospital. He was also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the UAB School of Medicine and trained numerous surgical residents. Over his lifetime, Dr. Breaux was awarded with many recognitions throughout his professional career, including the U.S. Coast Guard Letter of Commendation, U.S. Public Health Service Commendation Medal, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and President of the Birmingham Academy of Medicine. He was also a founding member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgery and a member of the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame.
In 2011, The Dr. Charles W. Breaux, Sr. and Ann K. Breaux Endowed Support Fund in Cardiothoracic Surgery was established by Dr. Breaux for the ongoing support of the UAB Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. It is most fitting that this endowment is named to honor Dr. and Mrs. Breaux for their compassion and commitment to others, as well as their dedication to the advancement of UAB. This fund established by Dr. Breaux allows the Division to pursue its mission to improve its patients’ quality of life through compassionate clinical care, careful scientific investigation of clinical outcomes, the discovery of novel therapies and the investigation of the basic mechanisms of the diseases that make cardiothoracic surgical interventions necessary.
