UAB Hospital has again been named the best hospital in Alabama by U.S. News & World Report.
Eight UAB adult specialties are ranked among the best in the nation, seven within the top 30 and one ranked 31st. UAB Hospital was also listed as “high-performing” in 14 of 17 assessed adult procedures/conditions in the 2021-2022 Best Hospital rankings.
Ranked programs supported by the Department of Surgery included:
- Cancer at No. 27
- Cardiology/Heart Surgery at No. 29
- Pulmonology/Lung Surgery at No. 31.
- Gastroenterology/GI Surgery, high-performing
Many Department of Surgery oncologic divisions – including the Division of Surgical Oncology, which recently named a new division director, Vikas Dudeja, M.D. – has strong partnerships with UAB Medicine and the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB to provide excellent patient care for those battling cancer, contributing to the 27th in the nation ranking.
The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy supported both Cardiology/Heart Surgery and Pulmonology/Lung Surgery specialties at number 29 and 31, respectively. Notable division leadership includes Cardiothoracic Division Director James Davies, M.D., the UAB Medicine Director of Heart Transplantation and Lung Transplantation Charles Hoopes, M.D., and Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy Division Director Adam Beck, M.D.
In partnership with their medical colleagues, the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery paved the way for the Gastroenterology/GI Surgery high-performing ranking. With over 20 expert faculty, the division clinical, research, and academic efforts are led by Director Gregory Kennedy, M.D., Ph.D.
The Best Hospitals specialty rankings assess hospital performance in 15 specialties or specialty areas. In 12 of these, rankings are determined by an extensive data-driven analysis combining performance measures in three primary dimensions of health care: structure, process/expert opinion, and outcomes. In the three other specialties, ranking relies solely on expert opinion.
