The UAB Department of Surgery Pre-College Research Internship for Students from Minority Backgrounds (PRISM) and Surgery Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) programs have announced 2022 summer participants as well as new leadership.
Both programs provide either high schoolers or undergraduate students with valuable research experiences and access to prestigious surgeon-scientists.
Specifically, UAB PRISM provides promising high school students who are interested in careers in healthcare and medicine with hands-on research experiences under the mentorship of surgeons and their peers.
2022 PRISM students include:
- Courtney Stringer-Calera High School
- Gabby Byrd- Hoover High School
- Brandon Horn- Calera High School
- Yasmin Fisher -Hewitt Trussville High School
Effective summer 2022, UAB Endocrine Surgery Fellow Andrea Gillis, M.D., will serve PRISM as program co-director alongside Associate Professor, Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and President-Elect, Medical Staff at Children's of Alabama Colin Martin M.D., FACS.
UAB SURE provides promising undergraduate students who are interested in a medical career with research experience and knowledge that 1) increases their competitiveness for admission to medical school and 2) encourages them to consider careers in academic medicine, particularly the field of surgery.
UAB SURE is led by Program Co-Directors Rachael Lancaster, M.D., and Karin Hardiman, M.D., Ph.D.
