Nominations are open from now until July 7 for the prestigious Brewer-Heslin Award.
Founded in 2015, the Brewer-Heslin Award recognizes those who exhibit excellence in patient care and is named for the late Alabama Governor Albert P. Brewer and Martin Heslin, M.D., a longtime UAB surgeon leader. Brewer made the gift for the endowment in appreciation of the professionalism he observed and admired in Heslin, who had been his surgeon.
Each year, the award aims to recognizes one physician at UAB Medicine who demonstrates extraordinary commitment to providing highly skilled and deeply compassionate medical care to patients. Each department may nominate only one faculty member, and a winner may not be named from the same department for two consecutive years.
In the past seven years, the department has had two winners of the award: the innagural-year winner and former James P. Hayes Endowed Professor of Gastrointestinal Oncology Martin Heslin, M.D., as well as Section Chief of Breast Surgery and Vice Chair of Patient Experience Catherine Parker, M.D.
