Gillis Mustian Compressed 011223UAB Division of Breast and Endocrine Surgery Assistant Professor Andrea Gillis, M.D., and Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery Instructor Margaux Mustian, M.D., MSPH, have been selected as Associate Clerkship Directors for the Department of Surgery Clerkship Program.

Together, they will work closely with Director of the Medical Student Surgery Clerkship Dr. Jessica Fazendin and Director of the Fourth Year Medical Student Clerkship Dr. Robert Dabal

Andrea Gillis, M.D.

Gillis is a board-certified surgeon and received her medical degree from Columbia University. She completed her surgical residency at Albany Medical Center in New York and completed an endocrine surgery fellowship at UAB.

She has clinical interests in thyroid cancer, benign thyroid disease, hyperparathyroidism, adrenal disease and surgical treatment of inherited endocrine syndromes.

Gillis has a passion for health outcome disparities and translational science research in the field of epigenetics and has been the recipient of a grant for Early Surgeon Scientists (ESSP) from the National Institutes of Health.

Margaux Mustian, M.D., MSPH

Mustian received her medical degree from Wake Forest University and completed a general surgery residency at UAB. She also holds a Master of Science in Public Health from UAB.

She began her career in surgery as an instructor at the UAB Department of Surgery and has clinical and research interests in gallbladder disease, abdominal wall hernias, health disparities and services research and surgical education.

About the UAB Surgery Clerkship Program

The Department of Surgery offers an eight-week rotation surgery clerkship for third-year medical students.

The Surgery Clerkship educates students on the role of surgical teams in hospitalized patient care. Students will develop a thorough understanding of common surgical diseases with a focus on learning manual skills.
