UAB Surgical Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program participants, Jeong Chang and Nolan McKibben, received second and third place, respectively, at this year’s UAB Summer Expo for research.
"We are so very proud of Jeong and Nolan for their hard work and great presentations," added SURE Co-Director Karin Hardiman, M.D., Ph.D. “SURE is a rewarding experience for both faculty members and students, and we look forward to next year’s projects to come.”
About the Surgical Undergraduate Research Experience
The primary objective of the SURE program is to offer undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a medical career the opportunity to gain research experience and knowledge. The program aims to improve their chances of admission to medical school and motivate them to pursue careers in academic medicine.
Over eight weeks of summer break, students work at the Department of Surgery --receiving guidance from general surgery residents, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty members to develop projects, create presentations, and submit abstracts to the Academic Surgical Congress (ASC).
"We are consistently very impressed with the quality of the presentations that SURE students deliver. One of our favorite parts of the program is watching participants grow and transform as lifelong learners and researchers through this process," said SURE Co-Director Rachael Lancaster, M.D.
