Biography

A native of Birmingham, Dr. Sparks completed his undergraduate degree in Physics at Wake Forest University where he completed research on structural properties of blood clots. He received his medical education at UAB School of Medicine, graduating in 2011. Dr. Sparks began residency in General Surgery at Texas A&M/Baylor Scott and White, interrupting that training to pursue a post-doctoral research fellowship in pediatric intestinal failure at Boston Children’s Hospital. Returning to Scott & White, he completed his surgery residency in 2018. Afterward, Dr. Sparks completed a pediatric surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Michigan/C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. He is board certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. After completing his Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at the University of Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, Dr. Sparks joined the UAB Division of Pediatric Surgery as an assistant professor in 2021. His interests include intestinal failure, surgical critical care, machine learning applications, surgical decision support systems.
