After a decade of loyal service and leadership to the Department of Urology and Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, Dean G. Assimos, M.D., has been elevated to professor and chair emeritus status after his recent retirement.

Under Assimos, the UAB Division of Urology was established as a department in 2012 and has greatly expanded under his dedicated leadership. After retiring earlier this fall, Assimos plans to continue participating in ongoing federally funded grants and serve as a mentor to faculty involved in kidney stone-related research.

Assimos promoted excellence throughout the course of his career at UAB and is remembered by fellow colleagues, staff, and students as a well-rounded and ardent leader of the Department of Urology. His commitment to increasing educational and research opportunities for students and faculty alike exemplified his charisma and transformational impact as the inaugural chair.

Our department’s interim chair, Soroush Rais-Bahrami, M.D., looks forward to continuing to collaborate with Assimos in urology research and the ongoing development of the department in the years ahead.
