If you are considering the BSN Pathway, it is built on a traditional four-year undergraduate curriculum that provides a foundational education that includes both academic and professional nursing courses essential for clinical competence and informed judgments about health and patient care in a variety of settings with families and individuals of all ages.
Graduates of the BSN Pathway are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and become a registered nurse.

Dean’s Scholars Program
The Dean’s Nursing Scholars Program is designed for academically talented high school seniors who are strongly considering a career in nursing.
Scholars receive a number of benefits, including:
- Opportunities to attend School of Nursing special events designed for the Scholars.
- Priority admission to the highly regarded and competitive BSN nursing program as long as the Scholar:
- Enrolls at UAB directly from high school.
- Successfully completes the required undergraduate pre-requisite foundation and core classes.
- Achieve and maintain a 3.2 or higher GPA in the required pre-nursing foundation courses and cumulative GPA (All Area V courses must be taken at UAB).
Criteria for Selection
- Individuals selected for the Dean’s Nursing Scholars Program must:
- Be a high school senior.
- Possess a minimum high school grade point average of 3.8
- Be admitted to UAB through the UAB Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
- For priority consideration, admission applications to UAB must be submitted by December 1 of the applicant’s high school senior year.

Timeline for Applying to the UAB School of Nursing
Your timeline to graduate with a BSN degree begins your senior year of high school:
- August - September: schedule a campus visit and tour the School of Nursing. A visit can be scheduled on the Special Interest Session tab on the campus visit web page.
- Apply for admission to UAB before December 1st to meet deadline for University Scholarships.
- Students receiving a university scholarship attend a UAB Scholarship Reception.
- February: Submit housing information and apply for housing scholarships.
- March: Sign up for UAB's orientation program, Blazer Beginnings (the sooner the better)
- May - August: Attend UAB's orientation program, Blazer Beginnings, where you meet with your advisor and register for classes. Make sure you register for the School of Nursing required Freshman Year Experience Course (FYE)
- Once you start your first semester at UAB you will want to meet with your advisor each term to discuss classes, the nursing application process and your journey through college.
- Sophomore – Junior (Until admitted to School of Nursing)
- Students typically apply for admission to nursing during their sophomore or junior year, depending on completion of all nursing prerequisites.
- Upon receiving notification of admission to nursing, submit Scholarship Application to School of Nursing.

- Once a student starts nursing course work, which typically occurs in the junior year of college, a student can apply for UAB School of Nursing scholarships.
- The School of Nursing at UAB has an excellent scholarship program that provides financial support to Alabama’s best and brightest nursing students.
- Currently, the School’s scholarship portfolio consists of over 75 endowed scholarships and 3 active sponsored scholarships.
- The school currently has an $10.1 million endowed fund that supports nursing scholarships annually.
- Scholarships are awarded twice a year – spring and fall semesters. The scholarship application process is simple. One application is needed to be considered for all undergraduate or graduate scholarships.

When should I talk with a Pre-Nursing Advisor?
As an incoming freshman student, your academic advisor will contact you prior to your new student orientation in the summer before starting at UAB.
What will be covered at new student orientation by a pre-nursing advisor?
Your advisor will assist in your registration for the fall semester’s course registration, and begin initial conversations about your academic plans.
