Captain Seth U. Lewis, subordinate to the Deputy Chief of Police, is responsible for all sworn personnel assigned to patrol operations. The patrol division is staffed by four Sergeants, four Corporals, and approximately 30-35 Patrol Officers, all of which have graduated or recertified through the Alabama Police Officers Standards and Training Commission. This division reports to Deputy Chief of Police Zandral Washington.
The patrol division is the largest sworn unit within the UAB Police & Public Safety Department and is the center from which all of the specialized officers are trained and transfer. That is why patrol must always be the backbone and heartbeat of the organization to ensure that all members of the department support and constantly ensure a safe, crime free environment for all faculty, staff, students, patients, guests, and visitors.
Our Department is a proactive department that has adopted the philosophy of “community policing.” This philosophy consists of various programs that address the underlying causes of crime on our campus.
Our officers respond to a wide variety of calls for service, approximately 150,000 annually, and patrol areas by a variety of transportation methods as patrol cars, mountain bikes, T-3 mobile electric transports, and motorcycles. These services include report writing, preliminary investigations, and security of university property.
